How much money can I expect to earn?

Salaries in Korea can range from 1.8 million to 2.5 million Won per month. It really depends on what city you teach in, previous teaching experience, and level of education you have. Keep in mind that the cost of living varies greatly from city to city. You can save a lot more in smaller cities making 1.8 million won per month.

Do I pay taxes while in Korea?

Yes, however taxes in Korea are typically 3-5% of your monthly income. The school you work for will automatically deduct the taxes from your salary. You will not be responsible for filing papers or documents with the Korean government.

How much money can I save?

Food, entertainment, transportation and shopping are all very inexpensive compared to what you are used to back home. The cost of living in South Korea usually accounts for roughly 20-30% of your income. Most teachers average 8 -10 million Won a year in savings and live a very good quality of life. Keep in mind that travel in South East Asia is very cheap so you should take advantage of seeing as much as the world as possible!

Where can I earn the most money?

Salaries differ from larger cites to smaller ones. You can make more money teaching in a large city; however, the cost of living is higher. Usually, the cost of living in a smaller city is much lower and thus, you can save more. A “smaller” city usually means about 500,000 and a larger one like Seoul has 20 million people.

Is it possible to have a side job to earn extra money?

Many schools give you the option of teaching overtime. Typically, adult classes are taught in the mornings or on weekends. Keep in mind that a typical day of teaching is 3:30pm to 9:30 pm so there are lots of opportunities to take on additional classes.

How much money should I have when arriving in Korea?

Typically you are paid once a month. You may have to go without a paycheck for a full month depending on when you arrive. I recommend bringing between $500 to $1000 just to play it safe.

Will I be able to pay off my student loans or debt while teaching in Korea?

Yes! You will be earning a great monthly salary and the cost of living in Korea is very low compared to that of the western world. I know of many university graduates putting $1000-1500US or more on their student loans each month!

What expenses will I have in Korea?

While working in Korea, you will receive free accommodation and you will only be responsible for the utilities, transportation and your food. The utilities for your apartment will cost around $40 per month. This can be split among your roommates should you decide on shared accommodation. Transportation is very cheap as well. The cost of food will depend how much you eat out in Korea. Some people like to eat out every night while others like to cook their own food. Eating out in Korea is very affordable. You can have some awesome meals at restaurants for only $4-5. You can also purchase a cell phone which are extremely popular and cheap in Korea.

Will I need a Korean bank account?

Yes. The alternative of keeping thousands of dollars hidden in your apartment is not advised. Most schools will directly deposit your pay into your account. When you first arrive, someone from your school will go to the bank with you and help you set up your account.

This will allow you to save money, have access to bank machines, and send money home at regular intervals.

How do I open a bank account?

Soon after starting your job, a representative from your school will take you to a bank where you can open an account where your money can be deposited. There are ATM machines all over Korea so you don't have to carry large amounts of cash.

Can I transfer money from my Korean bank back to my account in my country?

Yes, it is very easy to transfer money back home. Most banks have Western Union, which is very convenient for wiring money home to your home bank account. You will pay a small fee and the transfer usually takes 1 to 2 days.

How often will I get paid?

Typically, teachers are paid monthly. Most schools have their payday around the first week of every month.

What benefits will I receive?

When you finish your contract, you will receive one month's salary free as a bonus! Work 12 months and get paid for 13!!!
