Teaching and living in South Korea will change your life. Whether it is for the better or worse depends largely on how you start this great adventure. There are a few crucial factors to being a successful English teacher. The first is finding the right working and living conditions. I can help you here. I will only set you up with people I have worked with, worked for or developed a long-term relationship with. Another important step to being successful and happy is to understand Korean culture and attitudes towards work. The final and perhaps the most important is your own attitude.
South Korea is a rugged and beautiful country covered with mountains and completely surrounded by the seas. Its people are some of the warmest and most generous on earth. South Korea has an ancient culture filled with customs but continues to be a fast paced country on the cutting edge of technology. There is little crime in Korea- people leave their cars running, house doors unlocked and goods out in the open. To a foreigner, the way Koreans trust one another may seem naïve at first. Soon you will realize, as I did, that this is the way things should be! I spent 4 great years in a country where I felt safe and never once felt threatened or scared.
If you have an open mind, want to learn a new culture and to live the adventure of a lifetime- you will get the most out of your experience. If you come simply to make easy money, compare everything to how it is back home, complain and are not flexible- you will not have a positive experience teaching and traveling.
I suggest you teach and travel to learn, grow and experience the unique cultures of the world. Korea is an ancient society wrapped in tradition and customs- yet on the cutting edge of technology. If you are a respectful guest in their country then you will quickly learn that Korea is an amazing place. It is a land of song, beautiful temples, misty mountains, calm seas and warm, caring people. Take advantage of this opportunity and you will be rewarded with memories that will last a lifetime.
